The last Governing Body passed preliminary regulations for the amendment of College Council composition, which would reduce student representation from 4 to 2 voting members, proportionally a 30% reduction of student voting power. The KCGS and KCSU presidents will be invited to attend Council meetings with the right to speak but not to vote.

KCSU and KCGS strongly oppose these cuts and have decided to put pressure on Fellows to vote with us in next Governing Body’s Congregation.

Why is College Council important for students?

Council is the main decision-making body in College. It discusses catering, infrastructure, rents, bursaries - practically everything that affects your life in college. King’s is one of the few colleges in which students have representation on Council. The proposed change will be brought before Governing Body, which consists of the entire fellowship and has the power to approve or dismiss any Council decision, for a crucial second vote before the end of Easter Term.

What are we going to do about it?

A joint extraordinary meeting of KCSU and KCGS last term decided to campaign to persuade Fellows to support student representation on Council. This leaflet has information to help you approach Fellows that you know in college (supervisors, Directors of Studies, Tutors) to ask them to vote against these. Both unions are committed to further supporting students in this, and will provide all the help needed so that we can all safeguard our voice on college matters. In order for us to achieve this, we need your involvement in this campaign

Our Demands

-          There should be 3 student voting members in Council: one elected by the undergraduate Union, one by the graduate Union and the third jointly. This will ensure that the reduction in student vote is proportional to the reduction in the Fellows’ vote.

-          We welcome the invitation of KCSU and KCGS presidents to attend Council meetings as we believe that this will strengthen our voice and allow for better coordination within the college.

What You Can Do

As every fellow sits on Governing Body, we want you to approach your supervisors, Tutor and Directors of Studies about their vote on student representation. We want you to make the case for protecting all our interests on College Council. We need you to show the fellowship that we, the student body, are concerned about our future.

Talking to Supervisors

What am I asking my supervisor to do?

You’re asking your supervisor to support our demands, and vote against ratifying the Preliminary Regulations on Governing Body. You’re asking them to stand up for our continued representation on Council and involvement in decisions that affect all college life.

How should I bring this up?

This is up to you! Probably the easiest thing is to bring it up at the end of supervision. However, you may prefer to ask for a specific appointment, or address your supervisor in an email.

The obvious stuff…

Be polite and respect that it is your supervisor’s personal choice how they vote on council.

Know what the campaign is about- have a look at our websites, email the Execs, or come and talk to us for more information.

Talk to as many of your supervisors as you can - it only gets easier!
