Lent Term Round Up

Head to Head 22/1/05

Both the Men's and the Women's 1st VIII's were in action in the Cambridge City organised Head to Head race. This twice yearly race is two head courses back to back, with only a brief break to turn around in the middle. The results were encouraging for King's with W1 finishing 2nd in their divison and M1 winning their division and beating many 1st Division crew in the process. M1's win is more remarkable due to the fact that they won their division in both of last years race as well. Sadly the pennants are not that exciting, and identical!

The results can be found on the CCRC website. However they are rather unhelpfully orgainsed by start order.

Newnham Short Course 5/2/05

The Women's 1st VIII took part in the Newnham Short Course Head race on the 5th of February. Over a course that is significantly shorter than the standard head course they had a good race, finishing within 30 seconds of the overall winners. This meant that they finished a very repectable 8th position.

The full results can be found on the NCBC website.

Robinson Head 11/2/05

Both the Men's and the Women's 1st VIII's took part in this years Robinson Head. The Men's 1st VIII finished 10th and the Women 8th. It should be remembered that as the race is organised by crew name rather than bumps divisions, this means that the top crews on the river were in direct competition with the King's boats. The results show that there are definate improvments that need to be made before bumps for the crews to achieve their full potential

The results can be found on the Robinson website. THere are alson some photos available. Thise are located here. Click "Robinson Head" and then "division 2".

Pembroke Regatta 19/02/05

With a number of M1 away it was up to the Women's 1st VIII to carry the flag for King's in this year's Pembroke Regatta. A tricky draw against Lents Headship crew Downing was relished by the crew as an oppertunity to prove themselves against the nominal best in college rowing. A good start found the crew down but holding on. Over the course of the race however the Downing crew proved too strong and pulled away to victroy by about a length. Hopefully however the race practice will come in useful during bumps, when the quality of opposition is not so strong.

The results can be found on the Pembroke website. Sadly no details of the winning margins, but gives all the other essential information. The results are in excel format.

Lent Bumps

01/03/05 - 05/03/05

Getting on Race

Rowing for almost the first time together as a crew and with Mark Hancock (men's captain) coxing the women's 2nd boat made a brave but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to get on to this years Lent bumps. A time of 9:15 put them in the middle of the crews who didn't make it. Hopefully the core of a crew has been laid down for Mays however.

Tuesday

M2: Corpus II ahead were pushed out at 45 degrees to the bank and therefore this led to an easy row past for the bump. Allowed nerves to be settled for tomorrow hopefully.

W1: After a crab on the start and nearly being bumped the Women's 1st VIII gained massively on Darwin before they bumped out. The ensuing carnage led to a technical row over being awarded.

M1: After a good start it was realised that we were not going to catch Fitz within the 90 seconds that some of last years bumps took. After settling down we started to eat into their advantage, and gradually ground them down over the next kilometer or so. Finally bumping with half a length of overlap just before the railway bridge leaves us with a shot at gaining a place in the 1st division tomorrow.

Wednesday

M2: Rowed over behind Clare Hall. Gained initially to about a length, but a crab and lack of fitness/cohesion allowed Clare Hall to slip away. It should make for a reasonably easy bump tomorrow however (though this is bumps, so maybe not).

W1: Today was the 2nd division rest days and so W1 were not racing.

M1: Bumped up into division 1. Having a slightly scrappy start allowed Caius II to pull out some ground on us and very nearly catch Magdalene. They faltered going into the reach however and the 2 length lead was eaten away and the bump achieved about half way between the railway bridge and Morley's Holt.

Thursday

M2: Rowed over behind Clare Hall. Sadly didn't manage to make the predicted bump, but then the predicted treat from Wolfson II behind didn't materialise either.

W1: Bumped Emma II. Satisfying as Emma being bumped yesterday denied the opertunity for a bump on Darwin.

M1: Got to within 3 feet of Magdalene, but then ran out of river. Hopefully we can make up the extra ground tomorrow. Behind Caius II seem to be tiring rapidly, dropping back quite quickly.

Friday

M2: Well deserved rest day.

W1: In one of those perculiar bumps quirks W1 found they were chasing Darwin for a second time. This time there was no chance for Darwin to bump out ahead and so despite W1 catching 3 crabs they managed to achieve their second bump of the week.

M1: With Dave's (4) hands ripped to pieces, Ed who was still ill subbed in at 3 and Grey switched from 3 to 4. This change made the balance better but seemingly reduced the power a little, we didn't get as close to Magdalene today, compared with yesterday.

Saturday

M2: Rowed over. Wolfson II closed but were held off by some quite heroic rowing. Clare Hall got caught in carnage and were therefore not able to be bumped. Overall a result of up one, which is very pleasing.

W1: A straightforward bump on Magdalene. After all the previous speculation about WeHORR it turns out Magdalene sent their 2nd boat. So the Magdalene W1 crew stayed behind to get bumped.

M1:With Ed finding that yesterdays row was all too much for him we had our third crew change of the week, with Rhys stepping in at the last minute. Again this meant a slight drop in speed and we never really closed within a length. Cauis II were too tired to mount a serious challenge to our position and so we remained in the first division.

2nd Trinity Challenge Sculls 15/03/05

Having won last years event I decided that I might have another go at possibly the most painful of all rowing events on the Cam, clinker sculls racing. On the day I prevailed against 2 other scullers and a horrendous headwind to record a victory in a time about a minute slower than last year (despite having a much much better race!). The highlight of the race was overtaking the women's shell entrant who had started ahead of me, the lowlight that for the second year running I didn't get a pot.

Men's VIII's Head 19/03/05

With WeHORR falling on the same day as the Saturday of Lents it was left to the men to carry the KCBC flag on the Tideway this year. Having made it down to London on a lovely sunny day (no repetition of last years sinking and cancellation thankfully) a somewhat scratch crew (containing amongst others the Captain's brother who stepped in at the last minute) put in a sterling effort but somewhat dissapointingly came in 303rd.
